Chanderi Silk Saree

The Chanderi Silk Saree originated in a small town named Chanderi in the state of Madhya Pradesh. The craft of weaving Chanderi has been practised in families for generations. These are exclusively hand-woven on the handloom and these experienced weavers craft cannot be replaced by power loom. Only hand-spun thread was used and woven on the handloom with the use of needles. Separate needles were used to create different motifs. Weavers then coated these motifs with gold, silver or copper dust. Weaving on this was a very tedious process and it required two weavers to sit side by side on the same loom. Inspired by the Banasari Silk Sarees, some of the motifs used in Chanderi sarees are ashrafi, churi, bindi, keri etc. Some motifs are exclusive to Chanderi comprise nalferma, dandidar, chatai, mehendi wala haath etc.

The glossy texture and shine sets an original Chanderi saree apart from any other textile woven or produced in mass. The colour of genuine Chanderi sarees will always be in soft hues. A hand-woven Chanderi saree will always have an uneven surface.

Recommendations:
Hand wash in cold water with mild detergent. Do not use washing machine.
Do not expose to sunlight. Dry in shade and always on reverse side.
To retain the shine of zori, do not spray perfume and deodorant directly on the fabric.
Fold it properly and use a hanger for storage.
