Uppada Silk Sarees

Photo Curtsey: Adi Mohini Mohan Kanjilal

Uppada Silk or Uppada Jamdani Silk is named after a small beach town of Upadda in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, India. Uppada Silk sarees are made from the age old Jamdani method. Jamdani style of weaving is originated in Bangladesh. In 19th Century, it was brought to South India and in Uppada village. Jamdani style of weaving recreated with local resource.

Jamdani made in Uppada has two weavers working on a single loom and weaving delicate and beautiful designs on the fabric by zori work. This is non-mechanical technique. Since this is an art practiced solely by hands, it takes two months before a superb piece of work is finished. Uppada Silk sarees are known for their light weight.
