Phulkari Stitch Silk Sarees

Photo Curtsey: Adi Mohini Mohan Kanjilal

Phulkari, which means ‘flower work’, associated with the culture of Punjab, a state in India. The embroidery is done with coloured silk thread using darn stitch on the wrong side of the cloth. Each motif was created in a geometric grid. Long and short darn stitch was put to clever use for creating horizontal, vertical and diagonal thread work.

There is a feeling that it came from Central Asia along with Jat tribes who migrated to India and settled in Punjab, Haryana and Gujarat. In its present form phulkari stitch used in sarees, salwar suits and shawls is very popular in India and abroad.
